Kyle D. Moore petroliana collection comes to Morphy Auctions
The world's greatest collection of vintage petroliana will be offered for sale through Morphy Auctions, starting later this year.
The Pennsylvania auction house has announced it will present the Kyle D. Moore collection, in what's expected to be a series of record-breaking sale.
“We are honored to be handling such a prestigious and highly regarded collection,” said Dan Morphy. “The market for petroliana is red hot right now, and the Kyle Moore collection is the best of the best in terms of quality, rarity and condition. We’re expecting a very exciting series of sales.”
Cable TV entrepreneur Moore spent four decades acquiring the collection – described as "the Holy Grail among collections of its type" – before selling it in its entirety to a private investor in 2006.
“Even though the collection belongs to another individual, it is so famous within the hobby, it is still widely known by the nickname ‘Kyle’s Collection,’” said Dan Matthews, head of Morphy Auctions’ Petroliana department. “After the collection was purchased, the buyer decided it should remain at Kyle Moore’s house. It was a wise move, since the collection was purchased as an investment and was secure and well cared for right where it was.”
Following Moore's death in 2014, the collection – which features more than 900 gas globes, 150 vintage gas pumps and 2,000 petroleum-related advertising signs - will now be sold and is expected to achieve a total of between $15 and $20 million.
The collection will be offered across four or five sales, beginning on October 5, with subsequent auctions slated to run from January 2016.
