Lot 887: Bernal John Desmond: (1901-1971) British Scientist, A Pioneer In X-Ray Crystallography In Molecular Biology. Bernal Served As A Scientific Adviser To Louis Mountbatten During World War Ii And Also Contributed To The Planning Of The Normandy Landings Of Operation Overlord On D-Day, 6Th June 1944. A Good Autograph Statement Signed, J D Bernal, (In Fountain Pen Ink, The Text In Bold Pencil), One Page, 4To, N.P., N.D. (Annotated 24Th February 1953). Bernal Writes His Answers To Two Questions Relating To Albert Einstein, In Part, 'The Work Of Einstein Has Been To Make A Bridge Between The Classical Physics Of Newton And Maxwell And The New Physics Of The Atom And The Quantum….Like Newton He Was Able By His Superior Insight And Mathematical Ability To Put In A Coherent Form The Crowd Of Physical Ideas That The Scientists Of His Time Were Already Feeling For In Order To Answer The Unbearable Contradictions Of The Phenomena Of Electricity And Light. He Did Not Resolve Those Contradictions But At Least He Showed Clearly What They Were. Like Newton Too The Cast Of Einstein'S Mind Was Profoundly Influenced By Contemporary Philosophic And Religious Thought….Hence Even Despite Einstein'S Own Inclinations The Theory Of Relativity Has Been Given A Subjective And Pessimist Cast And Its Influence, Outside The Field Of Physics Where It Can Be Directly Used, Has Been To Disintegrate Rather Than Affirm The Idea Of Mans Knowledge And Control Of Nature. Unlike Newton Has Been, Einstein'S Own Life, Ignorantly Despised And Persecuted In His Own Country, Harrowed By The Tragedies Of His Own Race. Yet He Has Always Remained In His Courage And Integrity A Shining Example That The Spirit Of Science Can Not Be Extinguished'. Signed At The Conclusion. Neatly Annotated At The Head In An Unidentified Hand With The Questions Bernal Answers Including What He Thinks Of Einstein And What He Owes To Him And, Among The More Illustrious Scientists Of All Ages, To Whom Does Bernal Compare Einstein? Vg. Albert Einstein (1879-1955) German-Born Theoretical Physicist, Nobel Prize Winner For Physics, 1921. Isaac Newton (1642-1726/7) English Physicist & Mathematician. James Clerk Maxwell (1831-1879) Scottish Scientist In The Field Of Mathematical Physics. It Seems Fitting That Bernal Should Have Written His Statement In Pencil - The Scientist Had Determined The Structure Of Graphite In 1924. International Autograph Auctions' Autograph Auction October 2015 Saturday, 3rd October 2015 Estimate: £200-300
