Lot 700: ALS signed "T. Hardy," one page, 4.5 x 7, Arundel Terrace letterhead, February 15, 1879. In part: "I have been in the country for the last fortnight, or I should have replied sooner. On searching for the copy of 'Desperate Remedies' which you sent me…it seems to have been mislaid or lost. I cannot therefore examine the passage you refer to. But if you will quote the words, or what would be still better, send me another copy, I will look at the paragraph, & insert the omission. At any time I shall be ready to correct or revise passages in my works which may require such correction." In fine condition, with trivial soiling. An interesting letter on Hardy's first successful novel, published anonymously in 1871, with excellent literary content regarding his eagerness to "correct or revise."
