Lot 682: Desirable bank check, 6.25 x 2.75, filled out in another hand and signed by Hemingway, "Ernest M. Hemingway," payable to the bearer for $20, February 8, 1951. Endorsed on the reverse by Roberto Herrera. In fine condition, with expected bank stamps and cancellation holes (one stamp affecting the first couple letters of his signature). Herrera was Hemingway's close friend, part-time secretary, and brother of his Cuban doctor; he frequently accompanied the writer on his exploits aboard the famous fishing boat Pilar. While in Cuba during 1951 Hemingway wrote one of his most famous works, The Old Man and the Sea, which was inspired by his own marlin fishing trips.
