Lot 669: Raymond Chandler
Lot 669: TLS signed "Ray," one page, 8.5 x 11, personal letterhead, March 12, 1953. Letter to H. N. Swanson, in part: "There is a possible snag about your sale of the story Trouble Is My Business to Verdict which I had forgotten until reminded today. In the reassignment of copyright from Popular Publications to me the right of magazine publication is reserved to them. I think that all the reassignments from Popular were the same, but I do not have the photostat of the actual reassignment, because Brandt & Brandt have not returned them to me yet…I am sending you herewith a copy of another reassignment of copyright from Popular Publications which I think must be in exactly the same terms as the one I am talking about…I guess you will have to decide whether I have the right to sell this story to Verdict, and if there is any uncertainty about it, what kind of risk there would be. I don't want to be sued or to lose my copyright by improper publication. I don't think I'll deposit your check until I hear from you." Includes the aforementioned copy. In fine condition, with expected mailing fold passing through the signature, staple holes to upper left corner, and trivial creasing.
