Lot 66: Original vintage Japanese Geisha wig
26th March 2020
A rare original vintage mid-20th Century Japanese Geisha wig. Comes complete with two purple ties and an inner stand within an original Kiri box. The box features a lined interior and opening door with fully working clasp. A geisha's exquisitely-styled wig is one of the key elements of their appearance, alongside white face make up, red lipstick and beautiful kimono. Geisha are one of the most enduring and fascinating aspects of Japanese culture. Originating in the 18th century, 250 geisha are thought to still be working today in Japan. Geisha are women trained for years to an expert level in dance, music, flower arranging, and Japan's tea ceremony. Men pay large sums of money to be entertained by geisha. The wig is in excellent condition, with a real sense mystique - bringing to mind intimate evenings from long ago. Vintage geisha wigs rarely come to auction, especially examples that maintain this level of quality. A rare opportunity to own a piece of historic Japanese tradition. Box measures 41cm x 29cm x 36cm.
