Lot 633: Belgian painter and printmaker (1860–1949) who was an important influence on expressionism and surrealism. Supremely desirable etching by Ensor entitled 'Demons Me Turlupinant [Demons Teasing Me],' 7.75 x 5.25, signed in the lower border in pencil by Ensor. In fine condition, with mild overall toning and light staining to edges. This is one of Ensor's more famous etchings, the title of which recalls his use of the same verb—turlupiner—to describe his treatment by critics. Ensor would re-work this image to use as the poster for an exhibition of his etchings held at the Salon des Cent in Paris in December 1898. An exceptional example of Ensor's psychologically disturbing work.
