Lot 417: James Henry: (1843-1916) American-Born British Author. A.L.S., With His Initials H. J., Four Pages (Concluding Text And Signature On The First Page), 4To, Lamb House, Rye, Sussex, 27Th September 1913, To Miss. Louise Walsh In Stamford, Connecticut. James Writes A Lengthy Letter Following A Report Of His Correspondent'S Recent Illness From A Mutual Friend, Stating 'Please Believe That I Take The Most Faithful Interest In Your Convalescence & That You Have All My Sympathy In Your Sorry Adventure. It Must Have Been Sorry Indeed To Be So Laid By The Mule Which In The Very Act Of Embarking On A €Œpleasure Trip†- & One Can Only Rejoice That You Didn'T Fall From A Greater Height, So To Speak - Height Of Adventure I Mean; We Have To Seek Shelter When More Engaged In The Wilderness (I Think, You See, Of The Wilderness As Being So Not Far-Off From You)€¦.' And Continuing To Add That He Is Pleased She Remains 'In The Wicked Old World With Me - Who Have So Little Of My Own Natural €Œset†& Kin Left In It…', Further Writing 'I Hope You Don'T Sharply Suffer - As I Am Sorry To Say I Do Myself. I Have Chronic Angina Pectoris - Of The So Called €Œsimulated†Order It Is True; That Is Caused By A Deeply Infirm Stomach & A Treacherous Digestion, & Not Directly By Heart Conditions - Yet None The Less Distressing, & At Times Violent, From That. However, My Refuge And Relief Are In Rigorous Care As To Diet & As To Movement & Doings - Above All In Always Having Nitro-Glycerine…..One Learns A Bit To Manage - But It Takes A Deal Of Doing; & Strange As It May Seem To You (It Can'T Seem Stranger Than To Myself) I Am 70 Years Old! It Is Fabulous, But I Make Up For It A Little By Thinking Of You As A Delicate Young Thing Perhaps, But Still A Young Thing Of The Young Time.' In Concluding James Advises, 'Don'T Make Any More Grand Tours, - It'S An Infinite Blessing To Me That All My Journeys - Save The Very Last - Are Over. A Great Peace Comes With That Alone - Try & While & You'Ll See….' Accompanied By The Original Envelope Hand Addressed By James.
