Lot 375: Important members of the Rothschild banking dynasty. Ink signatures, "N. Rothschild" and "Lionel Rothschild," on an off-white 4.5 x 2.5 slip affixed to an 1836 letter transmitting the autographs. In very good condition, with scattered toning and soiling. Nathan was one of five sons of the second generation of Rothschilds and made his fortune in trading bills of exchange. His eldest son, Lionel, was a financier who financed the government's purchase of the Suez Canal; he was also the first practicing Jew to sit as a Member of Parliament in the United Kingdom.
