Lot 314: Hugo Victor: (1802-1885) French Poet & Novelist. A Poignant A.L.S., With His Initials V. H., One Page, Small 8Vo, N.P., 27Th October N.Y. (1843?), To An Unidentified Correspondent, In French. Hugo Sends His Sincere And Tender Thanks And Remarks 'I Hope To Soon Be Able To Shake The Hand That Wrote These Beautiful And Noble Verses' And Concludes 'Alas, I Am Called Mourning. Luctus Sum' ('I Am Grieving'). A Few Words Of Text Are A Little Light. A Band Of Uniform Discoloration To Almost One Half Of The Page, Lightly Affecting The Text And The Second Initial Of Hugo'S Signature. About G Hugo'S Oldest And Favourite Daughter, Leopoldine, Had Tragically Died On 4Th September 1843 At The Young Age Of 19. She Drowned In The Seine At Villequier, Pulled Down By Her Heavy Skirts, When A Boat Overturned. The Event Occurred Shortly After Her Marriage To Charles Vacquerie, Who Also Died In His Attempts To Save His Wife. The Death Left Hugo Devastated; He Was Travelling In The South Of France With His Mistress At The Time And First Learned Of Leopoldine'S Death From A Newspaper He Read In A Cafã©.
