Letter to classics scholar Frederick Apthorp Paley. In part: "In great haste I tell you that Mr. Gladstone writes the Preface to my book in which your name so often occurs. He wishes to know where and what Lucian speaks of masks: If you know the passage pray, communicate it at once." Affixed by its second integral sheet to a slightly larger scrapbook page. In fine condition, with one tiny edge separation near the signature and a bit of feathering to ink throughout.
