Lot 239: French diplomat, spy, and soldier (1728–1810) whose first 49 years were spent as a man, and whose last 33 years were spent as a woman. Archive of eleven untranslated receipts or ledger pages listing household expenses such as prices for firewood, lumber, clothing, and other items, dated from 1779 to 1785. Seven are ADSs handwritten by Chevalier d'Eon and signed in the third-person within the text, with variations including "M'lle la ch're D'Eon," "M'lle D'Eon," "Mad'lle la ch're D'Eon," with one initialed at the conclusion instead, "D." Two are in another hand and signed at the conclusion, one endorsed and initialed "D," and the other signed "La ch're D'Eon." The final two are written in the hand of Chevalier d'Eon, but left unsigned. In overall fine condition, with expected document wear. Accompanied by three additional documents in other hands. An especially interesting series of documents, as d'Eon identifies as 'mademoiselle' several times throughout, providing a level of insight into Chevalier d'Eon's unusual story.
