Datelined Washington DC April 10, 1849. In Full: Gentlemen, your favor the 5th been inquiring need to attend the celebration of the birthday of Mr. Clay is just received. It would afford me pleasure to join you at the occasion and assist in doing honor to a distinguished patriotic when history is identified with the honor and fame of his country, but the urgency of official duties render me impossible for me to leave this state of government at this time.
