Lot 202: Born Bartolomeo Alberto Cappellari (1765-1846), he served as pope from 1831 to 1846. Strongly conservative and traditionalist, he opposed democratic and modernizing reforms in the Papal States and throughout Europe, seeing them as fronts for revolutionary leftism, and sought to strengthen the religious and political authority of the papacy. ALS in Italian, signed "Card. Cappelari," one page, 8.25 x 10, June 24, 1826. Untranslated letter to "Padre Conca della Oratorio della Chiesa Nuova" concerning an audience with Pope Leo XII. Intersecting folds, two circular areas of toning from seal, and a few noticeable wrinkles, otherwise fine condition. RR Auction's Fine Autographs and Artifacts Auction 453 Sunday, 17th May 2015 Estimate: $400-600
