Lot 2001: Extraordinary vintage glossy 8.5 x 6.5 photo, signed and inscribed on the reverse in black ballpoint, "Love from John Lennon," "Love from Paul McCartney, xxx," "With love from George Harrison," and "To Cynthia, Love from Pete Best." In very good condition, with scattered creases, two heavy diagonal creases, and mild overall toning to the signature side. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Tracks stating that this was signed in January 1962 in Southport, England, as well as a letter of authenticity from noted Beatles expert Frank Caiazzo, in part: "These signatures are on the reverse of a photograph which features the best known pose of the group with Best, as taken by photographer Albert Marrion...This photograph was signed very early in 1962, and these are excellent examples of their signatures from this time period. This is the earliest known Beatles signed publicity photo in existence [as of 2004]." This is the first time this piece has been offered on the open market.
In December 1961 Brian Epstein hired Albert Marrion, a local wedding photographer, for the first official photo shoot of the future international sensations. This extremely early incarnation of the Beatles had Pete Best as the drummer, who would be replaced by Ringo Starr a mere eight months later. Fully signed photographs from the Cavern Club-era Beatles are exceedingly rare, with this never-before-offered example being one of the most desirable images obtainable.
