Lot 175: Schlesinger John: (1926-2003) English Film Director, Academy Award Winner. A Good, Early A.L.S., John Schlesinger, Three Pages, 8Vo, Kintbury, Berkshire, 4Th August 1948, To Mr. Eatwell. Schlesinger Thanks His Correspondent For Their Letter About The Film And Continues €˜We Shall Be Very Grateful For Any Assistance That You Can Give Us As A Crowd Artist’ And Further Informs Him €˜If The Weather Is Suitable We Shall Be Filming The Scenes In Which You Will Be Required On The Friday Afternoon As Stated. I Must Point Out However, That This Is An Entirely Non-Professional Concern - & That We Are Not In A Position To Pay Even The Expenses Of Our Artists. However, If You Are Interested, And Can Find Your Own Way Over To Inkpen We Shall Be Very Pleased To See You. Here Are Brief Details:- We Are Filming Scenes Of The Hanging With The Villagers Watching This On Miss White’S Farm - In One Of The Fields Called Parsons Hill. This We Shall Be Doing In The Afternoon At 2.30.€¦It’S Difficult To Tell How Long We Shall Want Everybody - So I Should Bring A Picnic Tea If You Can. We Shall Have A Few Hats For The Crowd But Otherwise No Costumes. Could You Equip Yourself In The Following Way If Possible - Either A Plain Farm Smock - Or A White Shirt With Long Sleeves - Breeches Or Long Trousers Tucked Into Long Stockings To Look Like Them And A Jerkin Of Some Sort Without Sleeves. That Will Roughly Look Like The Country Dress Of The Period Of 1672.€™ Schlesinger Concludes His Letter €˜If You Know Of Anyone Else Who Would Care To Come Along With You - Please Pass On These Details. We Will Try And Provide A Dressing Tent Of Some Sort, But If You Can Come Ready Dressed Or Nearly So, It Would Probably Be Simpler’. A Letter Of Excellent Content. Vg The Film To Which Schlesinger Refers Was His First Feature Film, Black Legend (1948). The 22 Year Old University Student Later Acknowledged That The Film, Retelling The Story Of A Double Murder Committed By A Farm Labourer And His Mistress In A Small Village, Was His €˜First Success’ And €˜Confirmed His Passion For Making Films’. International Autograph Auctions' Autograph Auction July 2015 Saturday, 18th July 2015 Estimate: £100 - 150
