Lot 142: Author: London, Jack. Title: Typed Letter Signed by Jack London, to a Miss Frances La Place, about socialism and the commitment necessary to embrace it. Place Published: Glen Ellen, CA. Date Published: Sept. 18, 1909. Description: 15 lines, on half sheet of typing paper with London's Glen Ellen rubberstamp in upper left corner. With original envelope addressed to La Place at 767 Market Street, San Francisco, Cal. , with stamps and cancellation. Jack London writes to Miss La Place about socialism, evidently regarding her as something of a dilettante: "The only way to find out about anything is to go to the original sources. . One of two things: either you must leave socialism alone, or you must take it seriously; or, if you persist in dabbling flippantly with it when you know nothing about it, for heaven's sake get some socialist on the other side who doesn't know any more about it than you do, but don't dabble flippantly with it to me. ." Fine or nearly so.
