Lot 138: Bookplates. An album of American bookplates by Edwin Davis French, late 19th century, 149 tipped-in engraved bookplates, together with three related autograph letter signed including one by Edwin Davis French dated 26th March 1905, album leaves with all edges gilt, early 20th century half morocco gilt, joints and extremities rubbed, 4to. Edwin Davis French (1851-1906) was born in North Attleboro, Massachusetts, and initially commenced his career silver engraving for the Whiting Manufacturing Company in 1869. He produced at least 330 engraved bookplates from 1893, and his designs were influenced by Durer and Charles W. Sherborn. He was a founding member and trustee of the American Fine Arts Society. Many of his patrons belonged to the Grolier Club. (1)
