Lot 1081: New York Yankees first baseman from 1915 to 1925, best known as the man who lost his job to Lou Gehrig. On June 2, 1925, Pipp took a day off due to a headache and was replaced by a young Gehrig—who then went on to play in 2,130 consecutive games. Ballpoint signature, "To Jim Davis with every good wish—Wally Pipp," on an off-white 5.5 x 3.25 government postcard postmarked circa 1945. In very good condition, with slight show-through from stamps to reverse, irregular toning, and toned tape remnants to corners from previous display.
