Lot 10: Abraham Lincoln Naval Commission For Important Commander
15th November 2018
LINCOLN, ABRAHAM DS August 15, 1861, appointing Fabius Stanley a Commander in the Navy. With vignette and green seal. Also signed by Navy Sec. Gideon Welles. Stanley helped out in the early part of the war with protecting and holding Fort Taylor in Key West with his steamer ship "Wyandotte". He also received recent interest in Key West since he captured a ship in May of 1860 called "William" which was a slaver and had 550 Africans onboard. He brought them to Key West and saved them from their original destination into the bonds of slavery. The appointment has been slightly trimmed along sides.
