Abraham Lincoln Endorsement Signed "A. Lincoln/ March 16, 1865. " One page, lined paper, 6. 75" x 3", [Washington]. Thirty days before his death, President Lincoln endorses below the handwritten statement, "Let the within named prisoners be discharged on taking the oath of 8th December 1863. " On December 8, 1863, the president issued the Proclamation of Amnesty and Reconstruction guaranteeing that rebels who took an oath to support the U. S. Constitution would be pardoned. A few of the letters have smudged, including the "n" in "Lincoln". With six signatures in ink on the verso: W. I. Burns, J. E. Hemford, Fred Charman, Thos. Charman, J. G. Glenn, and J. A. Mitchell. Framed together with a lithograph of Lincoln by Dwight C. Sturges Frame: 20. 25" x 21. 5"
