Warli Paintings – An expressive Folk Art of India
Every Warli Painting has a Chauk, either the Lagnachauk or Devchauk. Devchauk is a depiction of Palaghata, the mother goddess and it symbolizes fertility. 'Lagna' in lagnachauk means 'Marriage' and it is usually painted by women when there is an occasion of marriage in their family or village. It is meant to bring peace and prosperity in the lives of the newlyweds. Birds, Trees, Men, and Women are widely used in the Warli Paintings. Gods are not depicted in Warli Paintings since there is a belief that Gods are related to spirits in a Human Form.
Warli paintings are made by adivasis on the walls using non-permanent colors. The roots of Warli Paintings are still preserved and the core instincts of the art-form are not impacted by globalization. Some of the ingredients that are used by artists for the creation of Warli Paintings are Henna, Ocre, Indigo, Mud, etc. Warli paintings can be created on surfaces like Canvas, Cloth, Handmade paper, Ivory Sheet, etc.
Due to India’s richness in arts & culture, art collectors have always shown interest in Indian art form.
