Formed in 1782, Sworders Fine Art Auctioneers is a leading regional auction house based in Stansted, Essex. With an international clientele, particularly across Australia, China, Europe and the United States, Sworders are highly regarded for their expertise in a wide range of fields.

Stansted Saleroom

In 2008, Sworders moved into a purpose built and environmentally friendly auction house in Stansted Mountfitchet. Surrounded by North Essex countryside, the saleroom is ideally located just off the M11, 10 minutes from Stansted Airport and 45 minutes from the City of London. Capable of holding two sales a week, the Stansted rooms are open for valuations on Thursdays and Fridays from 9am - 4:30pm. (Apart from the week before Country House sales)

Hertford office

The company’s Hertford office offers collectors the opportunity to meet with Sworders experts. The office provides a full range of auction services, including:

• Free valuations and estimates for sale
• Written valuations of inheritance tax, insurance or sale
• Home visits to view and appraise collections or larger items

The office specialises in art works, modern collectables, militaria and miscellanea.

Every Thursday between 10:00 and 13:00 the company’s experts are on hand to provide advice on the value and care of works of art and antiques.

Auctions

The auction house has a lively programme, with auctions taking place at Stansted most Wednesdays. There are also regular specialist sales.

Notable sales

A Rhinoceros Horn Libation Cup - sold for £215,000 in November 2011

A Regency brass inlaid rosewood break front side cabinet attributed to Gillows, sold for £84,000 in November 2011.

1870 Japanese 20 Yen coin - Sold for £29,000 in March 2012

A pair of gilt brass candlesticks, designed and used by Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin - Sold for £68,000, April 2012
