Original artwork by the likes of Arthur Rackham, Beatrix Potter and Charles Schulz will lead an upcoming Swann Galleries illustration sale in New York.

The company's fourth annual auction of Illustration Art will include everything from book and magazine illustrations to advertising artwork, comic strips, cartoons and even costume design.

Leading the sale is an original Arthur Rackham illustration from a 1915 edition of the Charles Dickens classic A Christmas Carol.

Rackham was regarded as one of the leading figures from the 'Golden Age' of British book illustration, and his artwork accompanied classic stories such as Alice in Wonderland and Gulliver's Travels, along with works by Shakespeare and Edgar Allen Poe.

This full-page Christmas Carol illustration depicts Scrooge being confronted by the Ghost of Jacob Marley, and is expected to sell for $35,000-$50,000.

Another highlight is an original study by Howard Chandler Christy for his famous 'I Am an American' billboard poster, created in 1941 to celebrate the first 'I Am an American Day' (now officially known as Constitution and Citizenship Day).

Featuring an image of Columbia modelled on Elise Ford, Christy's muse and companion throughout his later years, the study was originally gifted to the class of PS. 60 at Ottilia M. Beha Junior High School, New York, and is estimated at $25,000-$35,000.

Further standout lots include a watercolour nature study of Squirrel Nutkins by beloved children's author Beatrix Potter, estimated at $30,000-$40,000; an Ernest Howard Shepard illustration from a 1931 edition of The Wind in the Willows, depicting Mole stretched out on a riverbank, valued at $10,000-$15,000; and a painting of Rip Van Winkle by Everett Shinn, created for an issue of Coronet Magazine in 1939, estimated at $10,000-$15,000.

The sale will also include numerous magazine illustrations by celebrated American artists such as Charles Addams and Edward Gorey, a Snoopy sketch by Peanuts creator Charles Schulz, and several original drawings of Disney characters by artists at the animation studio.

The Swann Gallery Illustration Sale takes place in New York on January 28.
