Suffolk Steer Cow painting

2015-07-06 11:51:28

The Suffolk Steer is now an extinct cow breed, meaning that we're lucky to have paintings documenting what it looked like. At auction from Bonhams, the 19th Century English School painting is a fond reminder that such an impossible rectangular bovine actually once roamed the countryside. The picture features all the tropes of mainstream British artwork of the time, choosing to focus more on accuracy than flair.
