Sotheby's Hong Kong to host Wei Dong selling exhibition
Sotheby's has announced a forthcoming selling exhibition featuring the work of the renowned Chinese artist Wei Dong.
The Hong Kong exhibition will explore the broad spectrum of Wei Dong’s career, spanning the past 20 years of his journey from his earlier subversive works to the gentle subtlety of his current creations.
Many of the works have remained in Wei Dong’s personal collection for many years, and will be displayed publically for the first time at Sotheby's.
“Wei Dong is one of the most technically versatile contemporary Chinese artists today," said Katherine Don, Head of Contemporary Ink, Sotheby’s Hong Kong. "The unusual juxtapositions of imagery, themes and values in his works speak to a broad audience and are a provocative response to contemporary society.
"Whether featuring contradictions between religion and politics, themes of subversion, Chinese and Western motifs, he manages to create a constant coherence in his paintings. In recent works, he is no longer shouting and shaking his brush at his viewers; rather, with confidence he quietly employs his unique painting and composition style to address more sophisticated and subtler themes that are as visually stunning and worth paying attention.”
Wei Dong’s recent works have seen him return to his artistic roots and create traditional ink and colour landscape scrolls, albeit with a more contemporary twist.
“My current works are quieter – the figures blend silently into the landscapes, intent on appreciating the beautiful scenery. But this isn’t simply a traditional landscape. My figures are classical characters robed in Western-styled drapery. I am trying to convey a deeper meaning by inviting viewers to think about the relationship between the figures and what they might be quietly conversing about."
"Instead of portraying angry, shouting figures, my approach is now more subtle and layered…The figures serve as a channel for me to say what I want to say – for me to express my sense of nostalgia for the past.”
'Wei Dong – A Selling Exhibition' takes place at Sotheby’s Hong Kong Gallery from July 29 until August 8.
