Sir Thomas Lawrence portrait bought by Holbourne Museum
A portrait by Sir Thomas Lawrence which has never before been displayed in public has been bought by the Holbourne Museum in Bath.
The museum sucessfully raised £420,000 to buy the work which has been held in a private collection for nearly 150 years.
The sketch is Sir Lawrence's 1791 "first sketch" of Arthur Atherley which will be displayed at the museum from the 28th of January.
To date it is the biggest acquisition the museum has ever made. It was bought with the help of the Art Fund and Heritage Lottery Fund along with over £60,000 worth of public donations.
