Go see this Robert Mapplethorpe retrospective in Montreal
"When you see a Robert Mapplethorpe picture, you are impressed by the beauty, but at the same time you can be amazed or feel not comfortable with what you see."
That's a quote I read this week on CBC from Montreal Museum of Fine Arts' chief curator Nathalie Bondil.
And Nathalie sums up my feelings exactly after visiting the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts yesterday morning for my own look at its retrospective of Mapplethorpe's photography.
If you don't know Mapplethorpe's work, you should give it a go. But it's certainly not for the prudish. In fact, back in the 80s, when Mapplethorpe was making it big, the Cincinnati Contemporary Arts Center's director was arrested on obscenity charges for displaying the works.
If you're going to be anywhere near Montreal over the coming months, I urge you to take a look. You have until January.
