Marc Chagall is a famous Russian-French artist and one of the most successful artists of the 20th century


Marc Chagall was born on 6, July 1887 in Liozna, near Vitebsk, Belorussia. In 1907, he began studying art with Leon Bakst in St. Petersburg. Since then on, his distinct style - synthesis of Cubism, Symbolism, Fauvism and Surrealism - began to emerge. In 1914, he took most of his paintings to Berlin where he held a one-man show exhibiting work dominated by Jewish images.

In 1922, Chagall left Russia and went to France. He lived there permanently until 1941, when he moved to the United States. Chagall received many prizes and much recognition for his work and most of what is known about his early life is documented in his autobiography called My Life. Marc Chagall died on 28, March 1985 in Saint-Paul, France. He was 97.

Most expensive works

Chagall’s best known painting is called Anniversaire (painted in 1923). The original oil on canvass was sold for $14,850,000 at the Sotheby’s sale on 17, May 1990 in New York. In October 2010, his Bestiaire et Musique was sold for $4,183,615 at an auction in Hong Kong, becoming the most expensive painting by a modern Western artist ever sold at auction in Asia.

Besides Anniversaire and Bestiaire et Musique, several other Chagall’s paintings are considered as masterpieces of contemporary art. For example: Au Dessus de la Ville (painted in 1915 and sold for $9, 900,000 on 15, May 1990 at Christie’s auction in New York, USA), Le village Russe, de la lune (painted in 1911 and sold for $8,252,500 on 11, November 1999 at Sotheby’s auction in New York, USA), La Mariee sous le Baldaquin (painted in 1949 and sold for £3,740,000 on 3, April 1990 at Sotheby’s auction in London, UK), La chambre jaune (painted in 1911 and sold for $5,502,500 on 9, November at Christie’s auction in New York, USA) or Le Buveur (Le Saoul) (painted in 1910 - 1012 and sold for $5,500,000 on 14, November 1990, also at Christie’s auction in New York, USA).
