Lot 537: Gwalior (Maharaja Sir Madho Rao, 1876-1925, Scindia of). Gwalior 1905 by J.W.D. Johnstone, published John and Edward Bumpus, , colour and black and white plates including chromolithographs and photogravures, some heavy spotting to tissue-guards and margins of plate facing page 11, presentation inscription from the Maharaja to front pastedown, 'With kindest regards from M. Scindia, Gwalior 1908', all edges gilt, original richly gilt-decorated green morocco by Bumpus with prolific repeated use of the Prince of Wales' plumes cypher to upper and lower covers, hand-painted oval miniature of the Maharaja inset to centre of upper cover, 6cm, glazed, a little surface wear to lower margin of lower cover, 4to Edition de Luxe 9/12. Provenance: This copy was inscribed by Maharaja Scindia and given to Viscount Lord Kitchener of Khartoum, who was at the time Commander in Chief of the Army in India (1902-1909). The volume passed from Field Marshal, Earl Kitchener of Khartoum (1850-1916) to his great nephew, the third (and last) Earl and has been in the family's possession ever since. (1)
