Lot 489: Lowry (Laurence Stephen, 1887-1976). Drawings of L.S. Lowry, with an Introduction and Notes by Mervyn Levy, reprinted, 1973, black & white illustrations, upper outer corner of front free endpaper signed by Lowry and with small drawing below of two dogs in black ball point pen, original boards in slightly worn dust jacket, 4to, together with The Paintings of L.S. Lowry, Oils and Watercolours, with an Introduction and notes by Mervyn Levy, 1st edition, 1975, colour and black & white illustrations, verso of title signed by L.S. Lowry in black ball point pen, original cloth in dust jacket (d.j. spine faded and torn with slight loss at head), 4to. Provenance: Both books were owned by the watercolour artist Ellis Shaw and thence by family descent. The volumes were signed and the illustration drawn by Lowry in the presence of Ellis Shaw. Ellis Shaw founded the Saddleworth Group of Artists in 1950. The Oldham artists James Fitton & L.S. Lowry both took a keen interest in the group and came to all the exhibitions, as well as tutoring the group. Both Lowry and Shaw owned a number of each other's works. (1)
