Lot 254: Author: Cumming, C. F. Gordon; Title: Original Watercolor of Yosemite Falls; Place Published: No place; Publisher: N/A; Date Published: [1878]; Description: 64x50 cm (25x19"), striking watercolor of Yosemite Falls, matted and framed.Constance Frederica "Eka" Gordon-Cumming (26 May 1837 - 4 September 1924) was a prolific travel writer and landscape painter who traveled the world, mostly in Asia and the Pacific. She painted over a thousand watercolors. This is an original watercolor of Yosemite Falls painted while she visited Yosemite Valley in the summer of 1878; another version of the falls was used to illustrate her book "Granite Crags" as it is assumed this painting never left California. The artist mounted an exhibit of her Yosemite paintings at her hotel before leaving. This version of the Falls could have been sold as it was purchased from a San Francisco antiquarian book dealer in 1977 along with a copy of the book. Her other paintings went to Scotland and eight were used to illustrate the book. The Yosemite Park Museum has five other original watercolors of Yosemite valley, two used to illustrate "Fire Fountains," one of the Himalayas, one of New Zealand, and one titled "Seacove" all acquired in England or Scotland by the Curry family when the managed the Yosemite hotels and camps in the early 20th century. Condition: Framed and matted with plexiglass, not examined out of frame, though no defects can be seen; fine or better.
