Lot 129: Trades & Professions. A large collection of ninety watercolours of Scottish tradesmen, mainly Edinburgh and surroundings, circa 1820 - 1860, watercolours, most with an ink manuscript title below image, a few with pencil captions in English & German, each approximately 360 x 250mm. An extroadinary social document of Scottish economic history by James Howie and his son. There are at least 75 different occupations shown from J. Pettit the Rat Catcher to a China Mender, a Newhaven Fisherman, a Highland Reaper, Strawberry Sellers, a Carrier of Childrens Coffins at Funerals, a Chambermaid and a Doorbell Installer. The subjects have individual faces which suggest they were specific characters. A large number (although smaller than this collection) of these pictures are held by Glasgow University as part of The Murray Collection.
