Lot 278: Author: Hokusai. Title: The Laughing Demon from Hyaku-monogarari (One Hundred Ghost Tales). Place Published: (Japan). Date Published: c. 1830. Description: 24.5x18.5 cm (91/2x7 1/4") chu-ban color print. A bright, rare woodcut print of an o-bake, or ghost, called the "Laughing Demon." This creature is a composite of two spirits--a hannya (a woman transformed into a demon by jealousy) and a yamauba (a demon who eats infants brought to the mountains). In 1978, Richard Lane noted that there were only five examples of the "One Hundred Ghost Tales" series. Condition: Fine.
