Landscape with Pan and Syrinx headlines Sotheby's auction
The painting Landscape with Pand and Syrinx by noted artist Peter Paul Rubens is set to lead Sotheby's Weldon Collection Auction, with an estimated value of $3,000,000-5,000,000. The famed Flemish painter is extremely well regarded in the art world and it isn't uncommon for his artwork to fetch large sums like this at auction.
The painting is one of Rubens' classic fantastical situation of the Greek god Pan, pursuing Syrinx towards the waterbed to seek the help of the water nymphs, who transformed her into reeds that made a haunting noise when blown by the gods. When cut into shape these created a musical instrument named the Syrinx, perhaps better known today as the pan flute.
