Gerhard Richter's Abstraktes Bild 776-1 is the headline lot of Phillip's London sale

Gerhard Richter's Abstraktes Bild 776-1 (Abstract Painting) is valued at 1.8m-2.2m ($2.9m-3.6m) ahead of a contemporary art evening sale at Phillips in London on February 10.

The circa 1992 painting is one of a number the artist created using a squeegee, which creates abstract bands of colour of extraordinary richness and depth.

An untitled painting by Christopher Wool carries an estimate of 800,000-1.2m ($1.3m-1.9m).

The work dates to 2005, and was created in part with the use of a spray gun filled with paint.

Wool's most desirable pieces are his "word" paintings, which date tothe late 1980s and feature large pronouncements in stencil. His later work, including theexample in the sale, is essentially a revival of the great New York abstract tradition.

Wool's auction record was set at $26.4m for Apocalypse Now (1988) at Christie's New York in November 2013.
