Richter Abstraktes Bild 1992Richter's Abstraktes Bild 776-1 was created with the use of a squeegee

Richter painted the work with the use of a squeegee, a technique he developed in the 1980s that creates alternating, pearlescent bands of colour.

His auction record wasset when his Domplatz, Mailand made $37.1m at Sotheby's New York in 2013.

An untitled work by Christopher Wool was another highlight, achieving 1.3m ($2.5m).

It dates to 2005 and was created with the use of a spray gun filled with paint, a technique that creates a rich and heavily textured surface.

Wool's most desirable works are his "word" paintings, which date to the 1980s. They feature large statements in stencil, drawing inspiration from the world of street art.

Apocalypse Now (1988) holds his auction record, achieving $26.4m at Christie's New York last year.
