Masterpieces by the likes of Paul Gauguin, Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso will lead Christie's forthcoming Impressionist & Modern Art Evening Sale.

The sale will offer 51 carefully-selected artworks which span the birth of Impressionism through to the most important movements of the early 20th century.

Headlining the auction is Paul Gauguin’s Te Fare (La maison), painted in 1892 during his first visit to Tahiti.

Gaugin's initial trip inspired some of the greatest works of his career. His painting 'When Will You Marry', also painted in 1892, currently holds the joint record as the world's most valuable artwork, having sold privately in February 2015 for $300 million.

Regarded as one of his finest and most vibrant Tahitian landscapes, Te Fare (La maison) will be offered for sale with an estimate of £12 - £18 million ($14.84 - $22.26 million).
Another standout lot is Pablo Picasso's monumental Joueur de flûte et femme nue, a portrait of his wife and muse Jacqueline Roque, estimated at £6.5 - £8.5 million ($8.04 - $10.51 million).

Depicting a voluptuous female nude being serenaded by a bearded flute-player, the work dates from 1970 and exhibits the eroticism which characterises much of Picasso’s later work.

Further major highlights will include Henri Matisse’s intimate interior Jeune fille aux anémones sur fond violet, painted in the South of France in 1944, estimated at £5 - £7 million ($6.18 - $8.65 million); Pierre-Auguste Renoir's 1881 landscape Canotage á Bougival, formerly owned by one of the most important collectors of the 20th Century, Dr Albert C.

Barnes, estimated at £3.7 - £4.7 million ($4.57 - $5.81 million); and Auguste Rodin’s Le baiser, one of the most iconic sculptures of Rodin’s entire career, estimated at £4 - £6 million ($4.94 - $7.42 million).

In addition to these highlights, the sale will offer important works from two major European collections: The Personal Collection of Barbara Lambrecht and Le Corbusier: Important Works from the Heidi Weber Museum Collection.

The Christie's Impressionist & Modern Art Evening Sale takes place in London on Tuesday February 28.
