Ernie Barnes Jr's The Graduate expected to make $30,000
A December 5 sale of African-American art at Treadway Toomey Auctions will include Ernie Barnes Jr’s The Graduate (1972), which is valued at $20,000-30,000.
Barnes played professional football for the Denver Broncos
He often found himself in trouble with the coach for drawing during his games, stating in a 1990 interview with National Sports Daily: "During a timeout you've got nothing to do – you're not talking – you're just trying to breathe, mostly.
“Nothing to take out that little pencil and write down what you saw. The shape of the linemen. The body language a defensive lineman would occupy... his posture... What I see when you pull.”
It was formerly in the collection of Motown star Gwen Gordy.
Other artists featured include Beauford Delaney, John Biggers and Sam Gilliam. The sale will take place in Oak Park, Illinois on December 5.
