Nice post on Victorian tear catchers or 'Lachrymatory' bottles. Lachrymatory bottles were used as part of the Victorian Mourning ritual to catch the tears of the mourner. Special stoppers then allowed the tears to evaporate the evaporation would then signify the end of the mourning period. They have in fact existed for more than 3,000 years but gained a resurgence in popularity in the 19th century.
