The company was founded by Ralph and Terry Kovel, two of America’s leading experts in antiques and collectibles. Their first book, ‘Dictionary of Marks: Pottery and Porcelain’ was published in 1953 after the couple began collecting porcelain from house sales and antique stores.
The book, now re-titled ‘Kovels’ Dictionary of Marks: Pottery and Porcelain, 1650-1850’, is still in print. In 1986 they updated their information about marks with a new book, ‘Kovels New Dictionary of Marks: Pottery and Porcelain, 1850 to the Present’.
In 1953 the couple started writing a regular column for The Cleveland Press. It was syndicated in 1955 and was soon running in 100 newspapers. “Kovels: Antiques and Collecting” is now the longest-running U.S. syndicated column written by the original bylined author, and appears in over 120 newspapers nationwide and online.
In 1968 they published their first price guide, ‘The Complete Antiques Price List’. Now titled ‘Kovels’ Antiques & Collectibles Price Guide’, the book has been annually updated and reprinted for 40 years and has sold over four million copies since its first edition.
The Kovels have been repeatedly consulted for their expertise and experience in court cases and in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Boardroom Reports and other newspapers. They wrote the "Collectibles" entry for the Encyclopedia Britannica and have even been featured as an answer on the TV game show, "Jeopardy."
The couple has also written articles for Forbes, Town and Country, Good Housekeeping, and a host of other magazines and other publications.
Ralph and Terry appeared on several television talk shows and starred in three television series: ‘Know Your Antiques’ for public television stations, ‘Collector's Journal with Ralph and Terry Kovel’ for the Discovery Channel, and ‘Flea Market Finds with the Kovels’ for HGTV.
