Vintage Schultz and Dooley Beer steins are collectible items of breweriana advertising.

They were produced as part of an advertising campaign for Utica Beer in the 1950s by the US West End Brewing company.

According to the 1930 Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act’s definition, “vintage” refers to pieces manufactured within the last 100 years and can include items made as recently as the 1980s.

Utica Club

Utica Club is a lager first produced in 1888 by the West End Brewing company, now known as the Matt Brewing Company.

The beer takes its name from the town of Utica, New York State, where it is brewed.

It continues to be made to this day today.

The beverage is perhaps best known as the first beer legally produced in the US following prohibition.

Vintage Schultz and Dooley beer steins

Vintage Schultz and Dooley beer steins were first produced in 1959 on the back of the popular TV advertisements featuring the two talking steins.

5,000 pairs of the ceramic steins were produced in 1959 by German stein maker King-Werk. These were often given to retailers although some pairs were offered for sale for $9.95.

These original 5,000 can be ascertained by the “59-CSM” or “59-CDM” markings below the handle of the steins.

10,000 later versions were produced between 1960 and 1964 by King-Werk without the 59-CSM or 59-CDM markings. These are less sought-after among collectors than the original 5,000.

Both versions are marked “WEBCO MADE IN GERMANY” on the base.

King-Werk also produced a number of steins for sale by Schmetzer. These can be spotted by their lack of “WEBCO MADE IN GERMANY” on their bases.

Later versions from the 1970’s to 1990’s were produced by Ceramerte and several other companies.

How much are vintage Schultz and Dooley Beer steins worth?

Matched pairs of good condition 1959 version vintage Schultz and Dooley Beer steins can sell for between $350 and $500 at auction.

Individual examples sell for considerably less than half the price of a duo.
