The first advert ever shown on UK television
ITV was launched 60 years ago this month, bringing with it the UK's first ever television advert-for Gibbs SR Toothpaste.
It may seem suprising-but the advert was very controversial at the time. Church leaders, teachers and many others thought that the promotion of products on television was crass and vulgar.
Famously, Labour MP John Wilmot expressed concern that it would make people want things that they couldn't afford, exclaiming: '"the nightly poison of advertising which boosts the sale of goods to the working class is against the national interest".
