Mego Wizard Of Oz Action Figures
Mego Wizard of Oz action figures are toys based on the celebrated 1939 film musical ‘The Wizard of Oz’.
The Wizard of Oz is one of the most popular feature films of all time, and has permeated every area of popular culture. After its initial 1939 release it began its life on American television in 1956, and became an annual tradition in the U.S. It was also re-released by MGM in both 1970 and 71 as part of their Children's Matinees series, and in 1974 the official animated sequel ‘Journey Back to Oz’ was released.
Featuring the voice of Judy Garland’s daughter Liza Minelli as Dorothy, and a host of famous names including Milton Berle, Mickey Rooney and Paul Lynde, the production of the film was initially started in 1964 but only finished in 1971 once Filmation Associates could afford to complete it.
It was released in 1972 in the U.K and 1974 in the U.S, the same year in which Mego released their range of figures based on the original film.
The Mego Wizard of Oz action figures
The initial Mego line of figures was released in 1974, and featured all the film’s main characters – Dorothy, Glinda, the Wicked Witch, the Tin Man, the Scarecrow, the Cowardly Lion and the Wizard himself. Each of the figures measures 8” tall, and they are modelled on characters as they appear in the film.
The figures are all jointed at the knees and elbows, and feature a number of accessories along with detailed outfits. They were sold in window boxes, with two variations; one with a plain green front, and one with an image of the yellow brick road on the right-hand side of the window.
The figures themselves also have a number of variations, ranging from different body types and facial colouring to the colour and style of outfits.
Mego also produced a range of 4” tall Munchkin figures in 1975, with different packaging to the main figures. The four characters – the Mayor, the General, the Flower Girl and the Dancing Girl – have no known variants in either the packaging or the figures themselves.
In addition to the standard 8” figures, Mego also created a line of ‘Super Softies’ figures based on Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion. These figures feature plastic moulded heads and soft, plush bodies, and were produced in limited numbers.
Due to the continuing legacy and popularity of the film, combined with the high quality of the figures, the Wizard of Oz line remains highly popular and sought after by collectors.
