Mego Super Pirates action figures were a range of figures produced by the U.S toy company Mego.

Background

The Mego Pirates line was part of a series of figures based on historical characters, both real and fictional. Released in the mid 1970s, these figures featured archetypal hero and villain characters such as cowboys, pirates and knights in shining armour.

The main benefit for Mego was that these characters were in the public domain, and did not require the company to pay for the licensing rights. This enabled Mego to spend more money of the development, design and production of the figures, which resulted in some of the company’s highest quality figures complete with well-made costumes, detailed sculpts and numerous accessories.

The World’s Greatest Super Pirates line was first released in 1974, with four figures featured in the range. Although relatively popular in the U.S, the figures were far more popular in European markets (where they were marketed by Marx Toys).

There are four figures in the range – two fictional characters and two real-life pirates. The figures all measure approximately 8” tall, with articulation at the neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees and ankles. Each came dressed in a detailed outfit, and included a number of accessories such as weapons.

The figures were:

  • Mego Super Pirates Blackbeard action figure

  • Mego Super Pirates Captain Patch action figure

  • Mego Super Pirates Jean Lafitte action figure

  • Mego Super Pirates Long John Silver action figure

Each of the figures was released in a single type of packaging, in the form of a window box featuring a cardboard insert with artwork placed behind the figure. These boxes were used in all foreign markets, with stickers used by the various distribution companies to mark them in different countries.
