Mego Robin (action figure)
Mego Robin was one of the first characters chosen by toy manufacturer Mego Corporation for its action figure line, the World’s Greatest Superheroes, in 1972. Based on DC Comics superhero Robin, the toy featured alongside Batman, Aquaman and Superman.
Mego’s World’s Greatest Superheroes
In 1972, Mego launched their World’s Greatest Superheroes range. The line initially consisted of Superman, Batman, Robin and Aquaman.
The following year, in 1973, Spider-Man, Captain America and Tarzan were added to the line.
It was at this time that Kresge cards were introduced. At first, Mego figures were released in boxes, but S.S. Kresge’s did not have shelves to display the boxes on.
Mego then created a card which the figure could be attached to and hung on S.S. Kresge’s peg board displays. Today, Mego figures with Kresge cards are thought to be extremely valuable.
In 1974, Mego introduced several female superheroes including Wonder Woman, Catwoman and Supergirl.
Mego began to manufacture Marvel comics superheroes in 1975 with the introduction of Hulk, Iron Man and Green Goblin.
Changes to production
Mego Robin was originally sold boxed, but later became available on a Kresge card.
The Robin figure originally came with a removable mask. However, this was very small and easily lost. Mego replaced the figure a few months later with one that had a painted on mask.
On June 29th 2006, a Mego Robin figure on a Kresge card was sold by Hake’s in an online auction. The figure sold for $12,196.80.
