Mego Planet Of The Apes Astronaut Action Figure
The Mego Planet of the Apes Astronaut action figure is a figure released by Mego as part of their Planet of the Apes line.
The Astronaut action figure was released as part of Mego’s wave of figures in 1974. Although the other figures in this wave were based on specific characters from the first feature film, Mego’s license for Planet of the Apes did not include the likeness rights for Charlton Heston (who played the human astronaut character Taylor).
Rather than spend extra money on the rights to use Heston’s likeness, Mego produced a generic action figure without a character name and dressed it in a costume that bore no resemblance to Heston’s costume in the film.
The second wave of figures featured two human characters, but these were based on the actors who played them in the television series as their likenesses were either included in the contract or far less expensive.

The Astronaut figure measures approximately 8” tall, and has 14 points of articulation at the neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, waist, hips, knees and ankles.
It wears a blue one-piece flightsuit with a zip along the chest, which can vary in shade and fade from a lighter blue through to purple due to different types of material being used during the production run. Along with the flightsuit, the astronaut figure wears black plastic boots, a white plastic belt and a silver helmet with a transparent blue visor and white elastic chin-strap.
